She was not fully prepared. I am no beauty pageant expert, but as a spectator I have a thing or two on my mind about Miss Philippines Gazini Ganados’ recent competition in the Miss Universe Pageant.
She’s inarticulate. It was very obvious in her interviews with local television. As we say in my dialect: “di halos maka hilwas, pinugos kaayu ang English.” I guarantee you that if she spoke in Bisaya she could’ve explained herself better. Instead it was very obvious she had memorized her statement, so she seemed both awkward and pretentious. Even if she reached the top 10 she would have real difficulty in the final round.
The problem with Filipinos is the expectation that we are fluent in English, but in reality many Filipinos cannot express themselves well in English. Gazini Ganados’ advocacy for the elderly is a good cause, but she could have spoken about it more effectively in her native language.
In an international pageant such as Miss Universe candidates need to be familiar with critical issues in the world. It is not something that you can learn overnight, it takes time.

It was obvious she was more nervous than excited. It was a competition for Pete’s sake! You’ve got to give it your best shot – you can’t afford to be nervous. Gazini is pretty no doubt, and she has a killer smile, but you cannot really see in her face the right excitement and enthusiasm. You don’t have the feeling that she really wanted the crown.
She has the looks, a very striking and exotic beauty, but she did not have the necessary skills for Miss Universe. In short, (kulang pa) she still needs more training.
Next time, send someone who is more prepared and articulate, and most importantly has the drive to win the crown!
They should send me next time! haha all the more we won’t win LOL
